Fall Recreational Soccer Overview

  • Everyone Plays a minimum of 50% of each game, regardless of skill level
  • Coordinators and Coaches make every effort to Balance Teams Fairly
  • Open Registration for boys and girls from 4 years of age through 9th grade
  • Season Ends with Playoffs
  • Positive Coaching a Good Sportsmanship a Fun Experience



    Age Eligibility:

    Boys and Girls From 4 Years of Age Through 9th Grade

    Must have turned four years of age on or before July 31, 2008

    Maximum Age: 9th Grade (Fall 2005 School Year)

    Players will be assigned to teams/divisions by grade as follows:

    Kindergarten & 1st Grade Kindergarten & 1st Grade
    2nd & 3rd Grade Boys 2nd & 3rd Grade Girls
    4th & 5th Grade Boys 4th & 5th Grade Girls

    6th, 7th, 8th, & 9th Grade (Coed)

    When: Season Starts with practices in late August. Opening day will be in early  September. The season usually ends in late October, but may vary based on weather conditions.

    • Games are played on Saturdays. 

    • There will be one weekly weeknight practice for each team, excluding the PK and K-1 Divisions. See below for details

    • Game and practice schedules will be available on this website prior to the start of the Fall Season.

    Where: Gambo Fields - Gambo Road, Windham, Maine

    Players Need to Bring:

    • Shin guards under socks

    • Team shirts (uniforms) handed out on opening day

    • Soccer cleats or sneakers 

    • Water or a sports drink (Concession Stand will be open this Fall)

    • A desire to have fun

    • NO JEWELRY when on field for safety reasons.

      Your Coach:

    • Your coach will call you prior to the start of the season, with the date and time of your first practice and/or game.

    • Your coach or assistant coach will call if your scheduled game is rained out.

      Litter:

    • Please do your part to help keep Gambo Fields clean of litter. If the litter bugs spent hours cleaning the fields after a day of games, they'd probably clean up their act. The volunteers thank you.

      Smoking:

    • Recognizing that adults are role models for all our players, smoking is not allowed in proximity to any fields at Gambo, as stated on the Soccer Maine registration form.

    • Parking:
    • Kids dart from between parked cars along the road. Please park in the parking area.   Do not park along the road.

    Our goal is to provide a fun environment for all players, regardless of playing experience.

    Sign-up sessions take place in late May and early June for the Fall Season. Notices are published in the Windham Independent, on TV Channel 7, on the WYSA website, and flyers are distributed through our local schools in June.

    Printable registration forms are available.

    Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten-Grade 1 Divisions play for one-hour on Saturdays. They practice for the first twenty minutes and play a game consisting of two 15 min. halves. There are no playoff games. All players are recognized at the conclusion of their last game by their coach and  division coordinator.

    Recreational League Guidelines
    Follows US Youth Soccer Guidelines for Small-Sided Games (revised April 2005)



    Preschool Division
    Follows U6 guidelines as follows:
    3 versus 3 – no goalkeepers
    Field of Play: width 15-25 yards x length 20-30 yards, with field size ratio remaining constant.
    Field layout and Rules of Game to generally follow US Youth Soccer Official Under 6 Playing Recommendations
    No more than 5 players per roster is optimal with equal playing time 20 minutes of instruction followed by 2 15-minute halves, with a 5-minute halftime.
    Ball size: #3


    Kindergarten-1st Grade Division
    Follows U8 guidelines as follows:
    4 versus 4 - no goalkeepers
    Field of Play: width 20-30 yards by length 25-35 yards, with field size ratio remaining constant.
    Field layout and Rules of Game to generally follow US Youth Soccer Official Under 8 Playing Recommendations
    No more than 6 players per roster is optimal with equal playing time 20 minutes of instruction followed by 2 15-minute halves, and a 5-minute break between.
    Ball size: #3


    2nd Grade-3rd Grade Division
    Follows U10 guidelines as follows:
    6 versus 6 with goalkeeper included
    Field of Play: width 35-45 yards by length 45-60 yards, with field size ratio remaining constant.
    Field layout and Rules of Game to generally follow US Youth Soccer Official Under 10 Playing Recommendations
    No more than 9 players on roster is optimal with equal playing time 2 25-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime.
    Ball size: #4
    4th Grade-5th Grade Division
    Follows a combination of U10 and U12 guidelines as follows:
    7 versus 7 with goalkeeper included
    Field of Play: width 45-50 yards by length 60-70 yards, with field size ratio remaining constant.
    Field layout and Rules of Game to generally follow US Youth Soccer Official Under 10 and Under 12 Playing Recommendations
    No more than 10 players on roster is optimal with equal playing time
    2 25-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime
    Ball size: #4


    6th-7th-8th-9th Grade Coed Division
    Follows U12 guidelines as follows:
    8 versus 8 with goalkeeper included
    Field of Play: width 50-55 yards by length 75-80 yards, with field size ratio remaining constant.
    Field layout and Rules of Game to generally follow US Youth Soccer Official Under 12 Playing Recommendations
    No more than 12 players on roster is optimal, with equal playing time
    2 25-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime
    Ball size: #5
